Disturbing Poll: One in Ten OK with Net Access Brain Implant

Here is a disturbing thought, 11 percent of Americans say they would be willing to safely implant a device that enabled them to use their mind to access the Internet, according to poll released yesterday by Zogby International and 463 Communications. If that creeps you out, the poll results get weirder.

The study also reveals 1 in 4 Americans say that the Internet can serve as a substitute for a significant other for some period of time.

Is that the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse I see headed our way?

The Zogby/463 poll of 9743 Americans examined people's attitudes about the Internet. The results just make me want to cut back on how much I sit in front of this computer.

* Other troubling poll results reveal 1 in 5 respondents said they would be willing to have a chip implanted in a child 13 or younger so they can track them.

* Ten percent said the Internet made them closer to God. On the other hand, 6 percent said it made them more distant.

Alas, a sigh of relief – the study found that our warped obsession with Hollywood is safe from the lure of technology. Poll results show Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson and Patrick Dempsey are considered sexier than the iPhone.

Before you give your neighbor credit for getting their priorities right on that last question consider this: one in five Americans said they would change their name to something completely different for $100,000 cash. The study didn't say whether that was before taxes or after.

Other poll results are a bit more mundane by comparison.

More than one in four Americans has a social networking profile on sites such as MySpace or Facebook. Seventy-eight percent of 18-24 year-olds report having a social networking profile.

Over half of Americans think that Internet content such as video should be controlled in some way by the government.

Several pilots offered dramatic accounts of witnessing UFOs

UFOs are no joke, group says
by Daphne Benoit
Tue Nov 13, 12:02 AM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - UFOs may be fodder for comedians but there was no
joking Monday when a group of former pilots recounted seeing strange
phenomena in the sky and demanded the US government reopen an
investigation into unidentified flying objects.

Several pilots offered dramatic accounts of witnessing UFOs --
including a transparent flying disc and a triangular craft with
mysterious markings -- as they insisted their questions needed to be
taken seriously more than 30 years after the US file was closed.

"We want the US government to stop perpetuating the myth that all UFOs
can be explained away in down-to-earth, conventional terms," said Fife
Symington, former governor of Arizona and air force pilot who says he
saw a UFO in 1997.

"Instead our country needs to reopen its official investigation that
it shut down in 1969," Symington told a news conference.

"We believe that for reasons of both national security and flight
safety, every country should make an effort to identify any object in
its airspace," said a statement from the 19 former pilots and
government officials from around the world.

The subject of UFOs came up in a recent debate among US presidential
candidates, with Democrat Dennis Kucinich saying he once saw a UFO --
making him the object of ridicule and jokes by late night television

Skeptics say UFO sightings are merely aircraft, satellites or meteors
re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.

But the retired pilots spoke to a sympathetic audience of UFO
"believers" who heard them recall their encounters with seemingly
other-worldly objects appearing out of the sky.

"Nothing in my training prepared me for what we were witnessing," said
James Penniston, a retired US Air Force pilot, as he described seeing
and touching a UFO when he was stationed at a British air base in

He said he saw an inexplicable triangular craft in a clearing in the
woods with "blue and yellow lights swirling around the exterior."

The UFO was "warm to the touch and felt like metal," Penniston said.
One side of the craft had pictorial symbols and "the largest symbol
was a triangle, which was centered in the middle of the others," he

Then after 45 minutes the light from the object "began to intensify"
and it then "shot off at an unbelievable speed" before 80 Air Force
personnel, he said. "In my logbook, I wrote 'speed: impossible.'"

Rodrigo Bravo from Chile's air force said UFOs needed to be studied
but lamented that the media often belittle the sightings.

"Sadly the UFO subject has been contaminated with false information,
out of touch with reality, provided by unqualified people to the
media," Bravo said.

"One of our most important civil aviation cases occurred in 1988,
showing that unidentified flying objects can be a danger for air
operations," he said.

"A Boeing 737 pilot on a final approach to the runway at the Puerto
Montt airport suddenly encountered a large white light surrounded by
green and red."

The pilot took a sharp turn to avoid a collision, according to Bravo.

The panel included a former Iranian fighter pilot, Parviz Jafari, who
said in 1976 he tried in vain to fire from his jet at an "object which
was flashing with intense red, green, orange and blue light" over

But when he approached, "my weapons jammed and my radio communications garbled."

A former Air France captain, Jean-Charles Duboc, said in 1994 he and
his crew saw "a huge flying disc" near Paris with a diameter of about
300 meters (1,000 feet) that left no sign on radar.

The disc "became transparent and disappeared in about 10 to 20
seconds," Duboc said.

The former pilot said like other major airlines Air France was mindful
of its image and it was difficult to raise the subject of UFOs.

A former official with the Federal Aviation Administration, John
Callahan, said government agencies discourage inquiries into UFOs.

"'Who believes in UFOs?' is the kind of attitude of the FAA all the
time," he said.

"However, when I asked the CIA person: 'What do you think it was,' he
responded 'a UFO.'"

When Callahan suggested the government tell Americans about a UFO, the
CIA official allegedly told him: "'No way, if we were to t

Eerie sounds coming from Saturn (as recorded by NASA)

Saturn is a source of intense radio emissions, which have been monitored by the Cassini spacecraft. The radio waves are closely related to the auroras near the poles of the planet. These auroras are similar to Earth's northern and southern lights. This is an audio file of radio emissions from Saturn.

The Cassini spacecraft began detecting these radio emissions in April 2002, when Cassini was 374 million kilometers (234 million miles) from the planet, using the Cassini radio and plasma wave science instrument. The radio and plasma wave instrument has now provided the first high resolution observations of these emissions, showing an amazing array of variations in frequency and time. The complex radio spectrum with rising and falling tones, is very similar to Earth's auroral radio emissions. These structures indicate that there are numerous small radio sources moving along magnetic field lines threading the auroral region.

Time on this recording has been compressed, so that 73 seconds corresponds to 27 minutes. Since the frequencies of these emissions are well above the audio frequency range, we have shifted them downward by a factor of 44.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The radio and plasma wave science team is based at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Dr. Karla Turner's Rare Books

Dr. Turner's books are all out of print; in addition,"Taken" and "Masquerade" are both very expensive to obtain on the used market. They also happen to be two of the most important books ever written on the UFO abduction phenomenon.

"Into the Fringe," Dr. Turner's first book, also provides much valuable background information on the experiences of this pioneering researcher.

If you read no other book on the subject of UFOs and alien abduction read "Taken." It is easily one of the most informative and relevant books on the overall implications of this phenomenon yet written.

Body Heat Used to Power Electronics

Aug. 17, 2007 — It used to be that human-generated electricity meant riding a stationary bicycle, or some such thing, to power a generator. But couch potatoes take note: simply sitting around could one day generate enough electricity to power electronic devices.

Scientists have developed new circuits that are able to harness electricity from body heat that would otherwise be wasted to the air. The advance could lead to battery-less cell phones and medical monitors that draw energy from their users.

"The idea behind it is that you can replace the batteries or at least you can enlarge the operation times of batteries," said Peter Spies, electrical engineer and group manager at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Erlangen, Germany.

Spies and his team improved upon semiconductors called thermoelectric generators that produce electrical energy in the face of temperature differences.

Normally, a difference of several tens of degrees would be required in order to generate enough power, but the differences between the body's surface temperature and that of its environment are only a few degrees. That produces about 250 millivolts, while electronic devices require at least one or two volts.

Spies and his team devised a solution. They incorporated a component into the circuit called a charge pump. The pump temporarily stores the incoming millivolts until they reach 1.8 volts. At that threshold, an internal transistor turns on and delivers the higher voltage to a component that can transfer the electricity to a device.

"I was in a plane last week when I looked out the window and saw
this white light. It was zigzagging around. I went up to the pilot
and said, "Have you ever seen anything like that?" He was shocked and
he said, "Nope." And I said to him: "Let's follow it!" We followed it
for several minutes. It was a bright white light. We followed it to
Bakersfield, and all of a sudden to our utter amazement it went
straight up into the heavens. When I got off the plane I told Nancy
all about it. But we didn't file a report on the object because for a
long time they considered you a nut if you saw a UFO..."
1974, Reagan was often quoted referring to the possibility of an
alien threat.

Harry S. Truman

"I can assure you the flying saucers, given that they exist, are
not constructed by any power on earth."
White House Press Conference, Washington DC, April 4, 1950.

Gerald Ford

"No doubt, you have noted the recent flurry of newspaper stories
about unidentified flying objects. I have taken special interest in
these accounts because many of the latest reported sightings have been
in my home state of Michigan... Because I think there may be substance
to some of these reports and because I believe the American people are
entitled to a more thorough explanation than has been given them by
the Air Force to date, I am proposing that either the Science and
Astronautics Committee or the Armed Services Committee of the House
schedule hearings on the subject of UFOs and invite testimony from
both the executive branch of the Government and some of the persons
who claim to have seen UFOs... In the firm belief that the American
public deserves a better explanation than that thus far given by the
Air Force, I strongly recommend that there be a committee
investigation of the UFO phenomena. I think we owe it to the people to
establish credibility regarding UFOs and to produce the greatest
possible enlightenment on this subject.
From a letter he sent as a Congressman to L. Mendel Rivers, Chairman
of the Armed Services

Committee, on March 28, 1966.

John F. Kennedy

"We seek a free flow of information... we are not afraid to
entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas,
alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is
afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open
market is a nation that is afraid of its people."

Nov. 21, 1963.

George H. W. Bush

"I know some. I know a fair amount."

George Bush replying in 1988 to a question about UFOs while
campaigning to become President. "

George W. Bush

"Sure I will,"

In a news conference on July 29, 2000, televised on CNN, George
W. Bush reply when a citizen asked if he would tell the public "what
the hell is going on" with UFOs. Bush indicated that vice-presidential
candidate Dick Chaney would use his experience as Secretary of Defense
to address the issue.

The significance of the COMETA report

Imagine if the head of NASA, the head of the US Airforce, and many top
US scientists issued a report that stated in its conclusion that
Aliens do exist and that they are visiting our planet on a regular
basis. Well, that is EXACTLY what the COMETA report is, which was
issued by the French Government.

The COMETA report is a fully sactioned report by the French Government
published by their head of their equivalent of NASA, their head of
their Air Force, and many of their top scientists and thinkers. The
conclusion of the report is that Aliens unequivocably exist, and that
they have been visiting our planet for a long time!

The other thing that it does is the report points a finger squarely at
the US Government and in it they say that WE KNOW MORE than they do
because we have been secretly capturing and reverse engineering alien
technology for over 50 years!

So why would our Government keep aliens a secret? There are several reasons.

1) The Government doesn't want to admit that there is a potential
threat to US security that they can not deal with. Aliens present
such a threat. Alien technology is litterally thousands of years more
advanced that what we had at the end of WWII. While we had prop
airplanes that could fly at 300MPH, aliens have gravity drives capable
of faster than light travel and the ability to visit other galaxies.

2) The Government wants to secretly acquire and use recovered alien
technology for military use. And so they cover it up.

3) Around 1947 you had the War of The Words Broadcast that litterally
caused a world wide panic. So the Govt. could only conclude that the
average american wasn't ready to handle the truth.

As a result of the above reasons, the Government has spent trillions
of dollars to cover up the fact that Aliens do in fact exist. They
have NASA which hides the fact that aliens exist on a regular basis -
starting with erasing the certain parts of photos that the space craft
take of alien buildings on the darkside of the moon in 1960s. NASA says they are looking for alien organisms in the rocks on
Mars, when they have known that aliens exist for over 50 years! Why?
Two reasons, they need to maintain a front for the military to reverse
engineer the alien technology in secret, and they provide more avenues
to waste money with commercial contractors.

Canadians Pass Law to Protect Big Foot

Bigfoot risks extinction, says Canadian MP
Wed May 2, 1:52 PM ET

OTTAWA (AFP) - Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.

So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

"The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing," reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.

"Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot," says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake's constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.

A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress.

Down through history, there have been numerous, if unsubstantiated sightings of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch in North American folklore.

The beast is said to inhabit remote forests, mainly in the US Pacific northwest and western Canada, and many believe it could be related to the equally mythical Yeti said to have found its home in Tibet and Nepal.

While sometimes described as large, hairy bipedal hominoids, Bigfoot are considered by most experts to be a combination of folklore and hoaxes.

But the legend remains strong, and Bigfoot researcher Todd Standing, who was behind the petition, claims to have proof of its existence, and says he fears for its safety.

"When I get species protection for them nationwide, I will make my findings public and I will take this out of the realm of mythology. Bigfoot is real," Standing told Global National television news.

He said he has 12 seconds of video footage of Bigfoot roaming Canada's western Rocky Mountains included in a 30-minute documentary, but his detractors say it was staged with actors.

His supporters hail from Canada's westernmost provinces, but Bigfoot sightings have been reported across the country, which is 90 percent uninhabited.

There are currently 516 plant and animal species at risk in Canada, according to Environment Canada. Another 13 species are already extinct.

This guide/article/plugin created some errors for someone, and some coding could be optimized etc.

With the help from Lazaryn’s cleaned up source and Bogtha’s comment on digg, I have tried making the plugin better.

Newest version is 1.3

When visitors is referred to your site from a search engine, they are definitely looking for something specific - often they just roughly check the page they land on and then closes the window if what they are looking for isn’t there. Why not help them by showing them related posts to their search on your blog?

This plugin/guide lets you do that, works with a long list of search engines!

The result of this guide, try to search google for photoshop mockup, and click the link to this site - you will be presented with a list of related posts right away!

Download the plugin here (1.3) and be sure to read the installation instructions below.

Thanks to Lazaryn and Mike Baptiste for helping out optimizing it.

Notice: If you used an earlier version of the plugin, be sure to remove this line from your templates header.php file:

1. Rename the files extension to .php and upload it to your wp-content/plugins folder. Go to your WordPress plugin administration and activate it.

2. If you use WordPress 1.5.x you will have to run this SQL statement manually (eg. through phpMyAdmin):

ALTER TABLE `wp_posts` ADD FULLTEXT `post_related` ( `post_name`,`post_content` )
If you use WordPress 2.x, uncomment the ls_install function by removing the /* and */ sorrounding it.

3. Where you want to show the related posts list, add this code:

You came here from searching for . These posts might be of interest:

    ’, ‘’, ‘’, ‘’, false, false); ?>

4. The plugin should be running!

Returning true if the referrer is a supported search engine - used as a conditional tag

Outputs the search terms

Outputs a link to the referring search engine

Outputs the list of related posts. This can be customized by passing variables to it. ls_related(limit, lenght, ‘before title’, ‘after title’, ‘before post’, ‘after post’ show password protected posts, show post excerpts).

In the code example in step 3 of the installation, it outputs 5 related posts, 10 words per excerpt (if excerpts are enabled), list item start before title, list item close after post title, no content before and after posts, doesn’t show password protected posts and doesn’t show excerpts.

Writtten by General Bernard NORLAIN, former director of the Institute of the High Studies of National Defense.

When the Letty general visited me in March 1995 in my office of 1 ' IHEDN to expose me its project of establishment of a new committee of study on the UFO, I ensured it of my interest, and addressed it to the direction of Association Listeners of 1 ' IHEDN (AA), which gave its support to him. Knowing that some 20 years before, 1 ' AA had produced, and published in its bulletin, a first report/ratio on the subject, it was only time to bring up to date it. Denis Letty seemed to me very indicated to animate this task; one month before, in February, it had organized, within the framework of the Association of the Alumni of 1 ' School of air, a conference on the not identified aerospace phenomena. In front of a public many, some of our comrades, old pilot, had exposed theirs spontaneously meetings with UFO. The person in charge for the study of these phenomena within the CNES had then presented its work and a known astronomer had described a version scientifically acceptable of the extraterrestrial assumption. The fields of knowledge concerned with the phenomenon UFO are very diverse, and it Letty general knew to find within the AA, but also outside, the many ones competences of which it coordinated the efforts. The list of the high level, civil diplomas and soldiers, of the members of his committee, is impressive: officers, engineers, specialists physical sciences, life sciences and social sciences could approach the study in all its aspects. It is not a question of a purely academic study. Concrete problems arise, and not only with the civil and military pilots, who call a response in terms of action. The composition of COMETA, name of the committee, in held account. Near total of its members have, or had during their career, of the important responsibilities in defense, industry, teaching, research, or various police headquarters. I formulate the wish that recommendations of COMETA, inspired by the good direction, are examined and implemented by the authorities of our country.

The first report/ratio of_1 ' AA had supported creation with the CNES of the only known civil official service in the world devoting to the study of the UFO. Can this new report/ratio, much more deepened, to give a new impulse with our national efforts, and an essential co-operation international. The IHEDN will then have served well the nation and, perhaps, humanity. Bernard Norlain, General of Air Army (Cr).

The accumulation of the well documented observations made by credible witnesses oblige from now on to not consider all the assumptions on the origin of the Flying Objects Identified, the UFO, and in particular the extraterrestrial assumption. The UFO, make from now on part of our media environment; films, emissions of television, books, publicities etch treating of the UFO show it amply. Although no characterized threat was perceived to date in France, it seemed necessary to former listeners of the Institute of the High Studies of National Defense_(IHEDN), to give a progress report on the subject. Associated qualified experts coming from horizons very varied, they gathered, within the framework of the Association of the Listeners of the IHEDN, _to form a committee independent of thorough study baptized Comets. Chairing this committee, I would like to thank the general Bernard Norlain, old Director of the IHEDN, Mr. Michel Desmoulin, President of Association, and Mister André Lebeau, former President of the National Center of Space Studies, without which COMETA the day would not have seen.

I want in addition to express our recognition with the various people who have agreed to testify or contribute to this study, and in particular with: Jean-Jacques Velasco, person in charge for the SEPRA within the CNES, François Praises, Director General of the Fleximage company, Jean-Charles Duboc, Jean-Pierre Fartek, Rene Giraud, pilots civil and military, Edmond Campagnac, old Directing technical of Air France in Tananarive, Michel Perrier, Major of the National Gendarmerie, Mr. Soun of the Directorate-General of the Civil aviation, Joseph Domange, general of the Air Force, deputy general of Association. I make a point of also thanking the commander for the Center of Command for Air operations of the Air Force for its participation at the time of the investigation into flight AF_3532 of January 28, 1994. Among the members of COMETA, which did not spare their sorrow during nearly 3_years, it is possible for me to quote: Michel Algrin Doctor d' Etat in political sciences, Lawyer at the Court, AA (35 "), 'Pierre Bescond Engineer general of the armament, 2nd section, AA (48 "), Denis Blancher Police chief of DST, Jean Dunglas Doctor-Engineer, Engineer general of the Agricultural engineering of Water and of Forests, AR (48 "), Bruno the Monk General of the Year of the Air, 2nd section, AA (41°), Francoise Lépine of the Foundation for the Studies of Defense, AA (33 "),_Christian Marcha1 Engineer in chief of the Mines, Director of Research to ONERA, Marc Merlo Admiral, 2nd section, AA (35 "),_Alain Orszag science Doctor physics, Engineer general of the armament,_2nd section. Denis Letty General of the Year of the Air, 2nd section, AA (35 ")_'(AA or AR xxO) Former listener of national or regional promotion No xx_SYNTHESIS_In 1976, an Association committee of the former listeners of I' IHEDN, chaired by Blanchard general, of the National Gendarmerie, tackled the thorny problem of the objects not identified wheels. Its recommendations were followed, during creation, within Center National Space Studies, Group of Studies of the Aerospace Phenomena Not identified (GEPAN), become in 1988 Service of Expertise on the Phenomena of Re-entry Atmospheric (SEPRA). 20 years after, this committee considered it useful to give a progress report on this file, of which the topicality is large, as testify some to many films and emissions of television devoted to the subject. In fact, the phenomenon remains, and numbers it credible observations and unexplained, in spite of the abundance of their data, increases everywhere in the world.

Our report/ratio opens on some French and foreign remarkable cases. We describe then the current organization of research on this phenomenon, in France and abroad. We expose the principal partial explanations suggested by scientists and calling upon the known laws of physics, by mentioning those, which could lead to achievements in the more or less long term (system of propulsion, nonmetal weapons). Then we make the turn of the principal advanced total explanations, in insisting on those, which are in agreement with the current data of science, of the machines secrecies with the extraterrestrial demonstrations. Our recommendations are related to the impact of the phenomenon UFO on defense on broad direction. _1 Facts and testimony the committee auditioned a military pilot and a French civil pilot who were confronted with the phenomenon UFO. Another military pilot forwarded to the president committee a written deposition, but wished temporarily kept anonymity.

The first pilot, former colonel, during a night flight on Mirage IV, in 1977, saw, like its navigator, a luminous object to move towards him; it transferred to avoid one _collision; the object transferred in its turn to place itself behind him; the pilot then reversed sound turn, and the object moved away at high speed. The same play repeated time little afterwards with a similar object, the same one perhaps. Only a military aircraft could have been shown too rapid and maneuverable, but the radar of Contrexéville would have detected it; however, questioned by pilot at the beginning of the incident, the controller said not to have anything considering. The speed of the objects was supersonic, but no noise was perceived in the area of Dijon where was held the business. The other controls military saw in 1976, during a night flight, a green gleam to assemble ground, to exceed the altitude of its plane then to sink on him and to avoid it with the last moment by passing very close to its right wing.

The radar operator controlling his mission did not detect anything, whereas others in control saw the gleam. The testimony of the pilot of Air France was corroborated by a letter of the copilot, who has observed the phenomenon simultaneously, and especially by a recording radar of January 28 1994; this last shows clearly during 50 seconds, around Coulommiers, road of the plane of Air France and that of an unknown object which crosses it. This object, which was brown and shaped like a bell and that of a lens. The object disappeared from their sight at the same time as from radar.

In four of the five foreign aeronautical cases presented, radar detectionshave corroborated the visual observations made by military aircrafts, in Great Brittain, the United States, Iran, and in Russia. The unknown objects accellerated to supersonic speeds; in two of the cases, one knows that no supersonic bang was detected, and for two otherc cases, there was not recorded information on this point.

In Great Britain, in Lakenheath in 1956, launched Venom of night to the continuation of a luminous object not identified found itself taken in hunting; the object followed to short outdistance during ten minutes; the pilot could not succeed in placing itself behind him, in spite of many operations which it carried out during ten minutes. He then regained his base. In the United States, in 1957, a plane of electronic countermeasures detected microwaves pulsated coming from an unknown object which accompanied it on more than 1000 km in the south of the country.

No supersonic aircraft, whether it is American or Russian, was at the time large enought to create a radar signature whose signal had the characteristics observed. Close to Teheran, in 1976, Iranian Phantom, continuing an UFO, lost the use of its instruments of flight and its radio communications and intercom when it is approached to 45 km of the object. The pilot then stopped the interception and found the use of its instruments and of its communications. Second Phantom took its relay; arrived at 45 muffs, the pilot saw an object leaving and moving from there towards him. Wanting to fire a missile towards this object, it noted that its control board of shooting, and its communications radio and intercom had broken down. It then carried out an operation of avoidance; with the course whose the object continued then joined the UFO.

In Russia, in 1990, the General Maltsev, ordered air defense forces to chase a UFO that was reported in. Many crews of the fighter envoys on March 21 on mission of interception described UFO passing the hovering at a speed two to three times higher than that of the modern fighters, the whole in silence. Moreover their maneuverability was exceptional.

In Argentina, in 1997, in San Carlos de Bariloche, a Boeing 727 was accompanied in its final approach to the airport by an object resembling a large plane, which was held on its flight line. The lights of the airport and the beaconing breaking down, Boeing had to go around and to represent themselves in the axis of the track for a new approach. The object, who had accompanied it during all this operation, became then luminous and carried out various movements of “stop and go” around Boeing before disappearing towards the Cordillera from the Andes. The crew, passengers, those of another plane and part of the inhabitants of Sam Carlos were pilot phenomenon. The committee collected testimonies of two former officers having observed UFO since the ground.

The first was responsible for the engineering departments of Air France with Tananarive in 1954, when a cylinder flew over the city in full day, to 50 or 100 meters of height, in front of several hundreds of witnesses, by causing on his passage the extinction of lights of the stores. The second, fighter pilot, observed in company of his wife, in 1979, of day, with 250 meters approximately of their house, an object having the shape of two reversed saucers one on the other. Initially stationary to 3 meters of the ground approximately, the object left without noise to the horizontal one, at strong speed, to disappear at the horizon in a few seconds.

A report/ratio of the KGB, declassified in 1991, described observations with multiple witnesses make by Russian soldiers of a base of missiles during one night of July 1989; in none them, one heard noise. An object carried out jerked displacements, with very abrupt departure and stop, and periods of immobility (such a behavior were observed with Lake heath before the incident of Venom which we reported). Another flew more quickly that the sound. A third, in the shape of disc surmounted by a cupola, was held motionless with_20 meters above a deposit of missiles, which it lit by a mobile beam of light. Jean-Jacques Velasco, person in charge for the SEPRA, exposed finally four cases of meetings rap-ochées in France, having given place to lawsuits verbal of the National Gendarmerie, to the committee. In Valensole, by an early morning of July 1965, a farmer has surprised two small beings near an object posed in its field of lavender. One of them has paralyzed its movements while directing towards him a tube. The two intruders then entered the object, which rose with the vertically and dissapeared more quickly that a jet.

The object left traces on the ground, and the witness could not during several years to make push back lavender around these traces. The Gendarmerie did one inquire of great quality into this business.

The Cussac incident, which took place one morning on August 1967, was the subject of one counter-enquiry of the GEPAN which in consolidated the following description: two young children saw small beings near a brilliant sphere. The beings entered the sphere, and shortly after, it rose in the sky at high speed.

The study of the GEPAN on the landing of Trans-in-Province, in full day, in 1981, is universally known. A foreman saw an object, having the shape of two saucers reversed one on the other, to land during a few moments on a terrace on the ground, almost with the short-nap cloth of a low wall, then to set out again, without noise, at a very high speed towards the sky. The object left prints on the ground, and caused deterioration, and in particular one premature ageing, of the vegetation around whose causes remain unknown.

In October 1982, also in full daylight, an object also in the form of double saucer descended in the garden from a researcher in biology. The researcher observed it for over 20 minutes, stationary, one meter off the ground. At the moment of the departure, which was very fast, the object shot towards the sky, and the grass was torn up during the short moment of acceleration. Bushes from an amaranth neighbor were extremely dehydrated; that gives rise to think that they were subjected to an intense electric field. The report/ratio of study of the GEPAN has as a titled “the Amaranth one”.

2 the point of knowledge the organization of research in France is made since 1977 around CNESIGEPAN, then CNESISEPRA, which succeeded it. It rests mainly on protocols between this organization, National Gendarmerie, the Air Force, Management General of the civil aviation, National Meteorology, and a certain number of laboratories. An independent scientific council, chaired by Hubert Curien, directed and controlled work of the GEPAN until 1988. Currently, the SEPRA team is much smaller than it once was. She works on the cases, which him are subjected mainly by the National Gendarmerie, incidentally by the Army of air and Civil aviation. The Gendarmerie carries out investigations, which can give place to very complete reports/ratios.

The Air Force has of radars and average radio operators of which it transmits on request the recordings. Civil aviation, when it gives an account of one case, transmits the recording of the conversation between the crew and air control. The investigations of the SEPRA, complementary to those of the Gendarmerie, can to comprise analyses of traces on the ground or on the vegetation, of the analyses of photographs, studies on the effects of the lightning, etc.. Of conventions of co-operation with laboratories make it possible to carry them out and try an interpretation of the traces.

The method of investigation, development by the GEPAN, rested on research made in connection with universities, and was approved by its council, composed of scientists from many different backgrounds of study. The group studies the unknown phenomenon by analyzing data jointly concerning: witnesses: physiology, psychology, etc., testimonies: account, reactions to the questions, behavior general, etc., physical environment: meteorology, air traffic, photographs, given radar, traces on the environment, etc., and the psycho sociological environment: readings and beliefs of the witnesses, and the possible media influences of the various witnesses groups.

The GEPAN has obtained important results. A large majority of the observations could be identified, sometimes at the time of the investigation of gendarmerie, as being man made objects such as satellites, balloons, etc.. However, out of 3000 official reports made by the Gendarmerie, a few percent of them were unexplainable by the CNES, in spite of the vast amounts of data collected. These reports are called PAND (Aerospace Phenomena Not identified category D).

Very thorough investigations, supported into analyses of traces, showed the physical presence of a phenomenon whose nature and origin remain not known. The cases of Trans-in-Provence and Amaranth mentioned in example 1, are particularly interesting. These reports are also very similar to foreign reports that were made.

There are now over 500 French aeronautical cases, which were collected from 1942 to 1995, which were unexplainable. A fifth of these were confirmed by radar under conditions, which attest of their physical reality. A report/ratio of the Twining general, person in charge for the Air Material Command, on first American wave of UFO in 1947, insisted on the reality of the flying discs observed; their very high climbing speeds, their maneuverability and their trajectories as futile, when they were detected. They supposed that they were either controlled or remote-controlled. Work of the GEPAN consolidates the topicality of this report/ratio.

Admittedly, CNES does not have fragments of a crashed UFO. Officially at least, the United States and other countries either do not have fragments from crashed UFO's either, which could constitute an indisputable proof of their materiality. But analyses of traces on the ground and the recordings radar, carried out in France and abroad, establish with a quasi-certainty the materiality of these UFOs. Moreover, the objects very often appear, “are controlled or operated by remote control", that is to say, according to one more modern concepts, provided with artificial intelligence.

French military pilots who witnessed these crafts all had the same impression - that they seemed to be remote controlled. And landings of Trans-in-Provence and Amaranth can conceive itself like natural phenomena. Certain PAND thus appears well to be flying machines completely unknown factors, with the exceptional performances, guided by a natural intelligence or artificial.

Many scientists tried to model the phenomenon of the UFO. Partial modeling related to air displacements in particular. Since 30 years, one the study of the magneto hydrodynamic propulsion (MHD) of the UFO developed, by analogy with that of the ships. It returns account very high speeds and accelerations observed, and, on the whole, of the frequent absence of noise, even at the supersonic speeds. For displacement in the space vacuum, it is necessary to consider propulsion by reaction. The American Edwards Air Force Base studies in particular the propulsion by antimatter.

One tried to explain the temporary breakdowns of the engine, frequently observed with proximity of an UFO, by the action of microwaves pulsated on the lighting of the engines. Other explanations are possible. Finally reversible paralysis of the witnesses close to an UFO, like in the case of Valensole, is undoubtedly explained also by the effect of pulsated microwaves similar to those probably used nowadays by the weapons with anti-personnel microwaves.

Among the total assumptions on the UFO, some are not scientists. Thus those, which call upon the action of the demon or parapsychology, cannot be nor cancelled, nor confirmed. The only scientific assumptions are those of terrestrial machines secrecies, impossible to support for the cases going up with much more than 10 years, and those extraterrestrial machines. These last run up against the considerable distances, which separate them solar systems. Some then evoke a hypothetical physique of the 3rd millennium, which would authorize to travel more quickly than the light.

It is not necessary, because two astronomers French, J.C. Ribes and G. Monnet, worked out a scenario of the future of our planet, which fact call that to the science of today. One sees our descendants there being accustomed gradually with living in the pleasant ones and green artificial hollow planets orbits about it around Ground, then Sun. They equip one day some of them with engines with antimatter and leave towards another solar system inhabited for a voyage without return.

Several generations follow one another in hollow planets until the final destination, where new planets are built, and the studied autochthones. Those will perceive the activities of our descendants as we perceive the phenomenon UFO today. In a very disputed alternative of this assumption, representatives of a very old land civilization now disappeared would have created age of planets dig, established in our Solar system, a long time ago.

The organization of varied research on the UFO abroad is presented in various forms. The US Air Force from 1947 to 1969 made a considerable effort in the United States with regards to project Blue Book to study these craft. One university commission directed by the Condon physicist made an evaluation of the file Blue Book. Conclusions written by Condon, in contradiction with the body of the report/ratio, were very disputed; according to him, the UFO phenomenon does not present a threat for American safety, and does not show them of being of extraterrestrial origin. It is not of a scientific interest. Any official research that is open is thus stopped; but one knows, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, that research continued very discreetly in the US Air Force and different government agencies.

Recently, an international scientific conference organized by Laurence Rockefeller, brother of David, showed the scientific interest to carry out at the great day of research on the UFO phenomenon, while taking as a starting point the organization and the methods to seek French assistance, whose results were extremely appreciated.

Great Britain officially centralizes the file UFO with the ministry for Defense. A recent holder of the file described in a book the articulation of his service with the Royal Air Force, the Weather, etc it expressed the wish which research is intensified and marked its preference for the extraterrestrial assumption.

In Russia, as one saw, the KGB studied the phenomenon, which does not leave the indifferent Air Force. The Academy of Science is also occupied some research on the subject. It seems well that, in almost every country of some importance, the services of information of the Air Forces follow the UFO phenomenon more or less attentively.

The UFO and Defense If decree that is often the assumption of extraterrestrial machines present in our sky (controlled, automatic or remote-controlled), it cannot be isolated. It thus calls, as of the access, a strategic reflexion. We know few things of the possible visitors and let us must try to guess their intentions.

Do they simply want to observe us? They want more to prevent one nuclear holocaust, or to divert us to send in their zone of space residence of the rockets with nuclear warhead to modify the race of asteroids that us let us wish to exploit? These objectives are more plausible than a project of invasion, but all these assumptions, and others, must be evaluated permanently. Strategies must be worked out to deal with various possibilities, such as making of contact the extraterrestrial ones with the government. It is possible that the United States knows a lot more about this than we do (French Government), and that they have collected alien bodies from the Roswell crash incident.

Google Dissects a Clickbot, And Discusses The Cost Of Click Fraud

The Clickbot.A botnet described in the paper consisted of 100,000 machines when analyzed in June 2006, and Google's potential click fraud cost was put at approximately $50,000.

Over the past year, Google has been reaching out to the media and the public to allay fears that click fraud represents a serious threat to its business. Its executives have repeatedly said the problem is under control and not significant for Google. Its engineers have released internal statistics, previously withheld, in support of that contention and published blog posts attacking the statistics and credibility of click fraud auditing companies. They have also added click fraud reporting tools to Google's AdWords advertising service.
Google on Tuesday published "The Anatomy of Clickbot.A," an analysis of malicious software used to commit click fraud. Despite Google CEO Eric Schmidt's past insistence that click fraud is "immaterial," the paper argues that more needs to be done to protect search engines and computers in general against botnet attacks.

"We believe that it is important to disclose the details of how such botnets work to help the security community, in general, build better defenses," the paper states, adding that Google identified and invalidated all the clicks originating from the Clickbot.A botnet in question.

The particular Clickbot.A botnet described in the paper consisted of 100,000 machines when analyzed in June 2006. The Clickbot.A software was designed to conduct "a low-noise click fraud attack against syndicated search engines." The authors of the paper, Neil Daswani and Michael Stoppelman, put Google's potential click fraud cost at approximately $50,000.

A Google spokesperson was not immediately available to clarify whether this potential cost might be incurred daily, weekly, monthly, or otherwise. But even if that's a possible daily loss, costing some $18 million annually, it's hardly a significant figure for a company with Google's revenue.

"It's unclear as to whether or not botnet-based click fraud is as profitable as keylogging and other applications of botnets," the paper states. "Having a botnet log all keystrokes, including passwords used to login to online banking sites, may allow a bot operator to obtain some average dollar profit per compromised machine. On the other hand, the bot operator could attempt to make that amount of profit by having a bot simply click on ads."

But even if click fraud is less profitable than electronic bank robbery, it probably carries a much lower risk of investigation and imprisonment.

The paper concludes that search engines need to investigate botnets, that ISPs need to better protect Web hosting customers, and that malware detection rates need to be improved. It calls for Web businesses to encourage customers to use anti-virus software and for security researchers and corporate IT department to share more security-related data. And with the publication of this paper, Google appears to be leading by example.

Google Algorithm's Top 10 (Assumed) Positive Factors

Google Algorithm's Top 10 (Assumed) Positive Factors

1. Keyword Use In Title Tags – "Notice number one – that you have HTML title tags that reflect the key terms you want your page to be found for. That's been the advice since I first starting writing about SEO back in 1996. Eleven years later – and even in the age of it's all about links -- it remains the top ranked tip by so many experts. – Danny Sullivan, Search Engine Land.

2. Global Link Popularity of Site (The overall link weight/authority as measured by links from any and all sites across the web – both link quality and quantity) – "Think of a web page as a town. If a city has freeways, airports, train stations, bus shelters and a port, that's a good indicator that it is an important hub. That orphaned web page with no links pointing to it? It may as well be a hidden tribe of Amazons that no one has discovered." – Lucas Ng (a.k.a. shor), Fairfax Digital online marketing analyst.

3. Anchor Text of Inbound Link – "Anchor text of the inbound link is one of the most concise assessments another person can make about what your site/page is 'about'." – Mike McDonald, WebProNews

4. Link Popularity within Site's Internal Link Structure (Refers to the number and importance of internal links pointing to the target page) – "As mentioned on my blog, you can pulse a page's rankings by including and excluding links to it from your home page." – Russ Jones, Virante CTO.

5. Age of Site (Not the date of original registration of the domain, but rather the launch of indexable content seen by the search engines) – "We have seen new sites flourish as long as they have a clear connection to the 'parent' site that has already gained trust." – Chris Boggs, Search Engine Land Associate Editor.

6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links To Site (The subject-specific relationship between the sites/pages linking to the target page and the target keyword) – "We seem to have moved from analysis of simply anchor text, to including surrounding text and probably even page theme." – Caveman, SEO/SEM Consultant.

7. Link Popularity of Site In Topical Community (The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world) – " I've seen one of my sites goes from #39 to #1 right after I got 1 link... from the #1 spot on the keyword I was trying to get" – Guillaume Bouchard, CEO NVI Solutions.

8. Keyword Use in Body Text (Using the targeted search term in the visible, HTML text of the page) – "If you are writing about 'dogs' then you should naturally use keywords related to 'dogs' within your content. If you don't have keywords within your content it can become hard to rank for those terms." – Neil Patel, Pronet Advertising.

9. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site – "This is why people bought PageRank 7 site links for lots more than PageRank 6 links. The links were very valuable, and the information on how strong they were was very valuable (this is why it's also very hard to GET an accurate read on anymore without an SEO shaman). – Todd Malicoat, Stuntdubl SEO Consulting.

10. Rate of New Inbound Links to Site (The frequency and timing of external sites linking to given domain) – "I don't think getting fifty links overnight will kill you. Especially if those links are bringing traffic and from quality sites. Getting 100K links overnight and having no visitors or search queries as a result smells abit fishy no matter how you look at it." – Rae Hoffman, Principal, Sugarrae SEO Consulting.

Google offers free Broadband access via TISP

Google TiSP Here! "Going with the Flow"

Google TiSP (BETA) is a fully functional, end-to-end system that provides in-home wireless access by connecting your commode-based TiSP wireless router to one of thousands of TiSP Access Nodes via fiber-optic cable strung through your local municipal sewage lines.

Installing TiSP

Installing a typical home TiSP system is a quick, easy and largely sanitary process -- provided you follow these step-by-step instructions very, very carefully.

#1 Remove the spindle of fiber-optic cable from your TiSP installation kit.

#2 Attach the sinker to the loose end of the cable, take one safe step backward and drop this weighted end into your toilet.

#3 Grasp both ends of the spindle firmly while a friend or loved one flushes, thus activating the patented GFlush™ system, which sends the weighted cable surfing through the plumbing system to one of the thousands of TiSP Access Nodes.

#4 When the GFlush is complete, the spindle will (or at least should) have largely unraveled, exposing a connector at the remaining end. Detach the cable from the spindle, taking care not to allow the cable to slip into the toilet.

#5 Plug the fiber-optic cable into your TiSP wireless router, which has a specially designed counterweight to withstand the centripetal force of flushing.

#6 Insert the TiSP installation CD and run the setup utility to install the Google Toolbar (required) and the rest of the TiSP software, which will automatically configure your computer's network settings.

#7 Within sixty minutes -- assuming proper data flow -- the other end of your fiber-optic cable should have reached the nearest TiSP Access Node, where our Plumbing Hardware Dispatchers (PHDs) will remove the sinker and plug the line into our global data networking system.

#8 Congratulations, you're online! (Please wash your hands before surfing.)

Note: If you have any difficulty installing, operating or simply living with TiSP, we suggest joining the TiSP Help Group.
Advanced TiSP Options

Professional Installation Service
You can also choose to request our professional installation service, which dispatches an army of factory-trained, sub-contracted nanobots from the TiSP Access Node. New Harry Potter Book - Deathly Hallows released

NEW YORK - What picture shows a dramatic gold and orange sky and a teenage boy in glasses reaching upward?

It's the cover to the seventh and final Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," coming out July 21. As always, the cover was designed by illustrator Mary GrandPre, U.S. publisher Scholastic, Inc., announced Wednesday.

"The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people," David Saylor, Scholastic's art director, said in a statement.

"For the first time, the cover is a wraparound. On the back cover spidery hands are outstretched toward Harry. Only when the book is opened does one see a powerful image of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, his glowing red eyes peering out from his hood."

J.K. Rowling's fantasy series has sold more than 325 million copies worldwide. "Deathly Hallows" has an announced first printing of 12 million in the United States alone.

The cover for the children's edition released by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, Rowling's British publisher, shows an adult-looking Harry, Hermione and Ron. The adult edition has a photograph of a locket bearing a serpentine "S" — believed to be the "horcrux" in which Lord Voldemort keeps a fragment of his soul.

France opens secret UFO files covering 50 years

France opens secret UFO files covering 50 years

by Marlowe Hood Thu Mar 22, 10:32 AM ET

PARIS (AFP) - France became the first country to open its files on UFOs Thursday when the national space agency unveiled a website documenting more than 1,600 sightings spanning five decades.

The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from the easily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex even hard-nosed scientists.

"It is a world first," said Jacques Patenet, the aeronautical engineer who heads the office for the study of "non-identified aerospatial phenomena."

Known as OVNIs in French, UFOs have always generated intense interest along with countless conspiracy theories about secretive government cover-ups of findings deemed too sensitive or alarming for public consumption.

"Cases such as the lady who reported seeing an object that looked like a flying roll of toilet paper" are clearly not worth investigating, said Patenet.

But many others involving multiple sightings -- in at least one case involving thousands of people across France -- and evidence such as burn marks and radar trackings showing flight patterns or accelerations that defy the laws of physics are taken very seriously.

A phalanx of beefy security guards formed a barrier in front of the space agency (CNES) headquarters where the announcement was made, "to screen out uninvited UFOlogists," an official explained.

Of the 1,600 cases registered since 1954, nearly 25 percent are classified as "type D", meaning that "despite good or very good data and credible witnesses, we are confronted with something we can't explain," Patenet said.

On January 8, 1981 outside the town of Trans-en-Provence in southern France, for example, a man working in a field reported hearing a strange whistling sound and seeing a saucer-like object about 2.5 meters (eight feet) in diameter land in his field about 50 meters (yards) away.

A dull-zinc grey, the saucer took off, he told police, almost immediately, leaving burn marks. Investigators took photos, and then collected and analyzed samples, and to this day no satisfactory explanation has been made.

The nearly 1,000 witness who said they saw flashing lights in the sky on November 5, 1990, by contrast, had simply seen a rocket fragment falling back into earth's atmosphere.

Patenet's answer to questions about evidence of life beyond Earth was sure to inflame the suspicions of those convinced the government is holding back: "We do not have the least proof that extra-terrestrials are behind the unexplained phenomena."

But then he added: "Nor do we have the least proof that they aren't."

The CNES fields between 50 and 100 UFO reports ever year, usually written up by police. Of these, 10 percent are the object of on-site investigations, Patenet said.

Other countries collect data more or less systematically about unidentified flying objects, notably in Britain and in the United States, where information can be requested on a case-by-case basis under the Freedom of Information Act.

"But we decided to do it the other way around and made everything available to the public," Patenet said.

The aim was to make it easier for scientists and other UFO buffs to access the data for research.

The website itself -- which crashed host servers hours after it was unveiled due to heavy traffic -- is extremely well organized and complete, even including scanned copies of police reports.

Bryan Baker's Blog - Running and Entrepreneurialism

Everyone should read Bryan Bakers latest post on the comparison of running with being an entrepreneur.

Read Bryan Bakers latest post here!

Ok as I said in the previous two posts, I am currently reading Aaron Wall's SEO Book, and part of it discusses Page Rank and how that is computed by Google to show what is called "Authority" to compute relevance for a given search term. In case you are new to SEO, it is the optimization of your site and creating relevant back links that enables you to place high within search engine results for given keywords.

This is really important because in order to generate a lot of relevant traffic - read traffic that does not bounce but converts (signing up members, selling produts, etc...) you need to focus on linking with certain keywords. What does this have to do with Page Rank? Well Google assigns a page rank to every single page on every single website it indexes. And many people have downloaded the Google Tool Bar which allows you to see a site's page rank. Here is where the myth begins.

The Google Tool Bar, I have discovered, is really misleading for several reasons:

1) Page rank - which is listed as 0-10, is actually a floating point number! A floating point number is a number with a decimal point that represents fractions. So actually there are really fine gradations between all page ranks.

2) Google does not update their tool bar very often! Actually it happens about once every three months or so. However, the real page rank - the one stored in the Google search algorythm is CONSTANTLY CHANGING, and as I said before is actually a number with a decimal point. So a PR 4 website may be listed in the Google index as PR 4.01334. Which means that not all PR 4 pages are equal!

3) I have a PR 0 site that is now getting a lot more traffic from Google than a PR 3 website that I have, which means that Google has not updated their tool bar, and in fact my PR 0 site may have a higher internal page rank than my PR3 one.

I had come to these conclusions on my own recently after looking at my traffic logs, but I also confirmed my suspicions when I did a search to find comments from Matt Cutts - a Google employee who had the following comments to make on Page Rank.

Page Rank as a floating point number - "It’s more accurate to think of it as a floating-point number. Certainly our internal PageRank computations have many more degrees of resolution than the 0-10 values shown in the toolbar."

How Google's Data Centers Transfer Page Rank which may cause a delay - "The latter. I think most data centers are running the newer infrastructure for things like info:, related:, link: and PageRank, and I believe every data center that has that newer infrastructure has the recent snapshot of PageRank now. I wouldn’t be surprised if it took at least 1-2 months for the other data center IPs to get the newer infrastructure in some way. (Yes, this is smaller, different infrastructure than the stuff that made site: queries have more accurate results estimates.)"

Page Rank is computed continuously - "I believe that I’ve said before that PageRank is computed continuously; there are machines that take inputs to the PageRank algorithm at Google and compute the resulting PageRanks. So at any given time, a url in Google’s system has up-to-date PageRank as a result of running the computation with the inputs to the algorithm. From time-to-time, that internal PageRank value is exported so that it’s visible to Google Toolbar users (see the question below for more details on the timing)."

Scientists show thought-controlled computer

Forget speech-recognition software: How about typing a letter just by thinking it?

In a quiet corner of the CeBIT trade show a small Austrian company is showing a "brain-computer interface," a technology that could one day transform how we use computers, play video games and even talk to each other.

It sounds like science fiction but is a clever application of science and technology. The system does not really read thoughts; rather, it measures fluctuations in electrical voltage in the brain and translates them into commands on a computer screen.

The system consists of a cap that fits over the user's head, with a few dozen holes through which electrodes are attached so they rest on the scalp. The electrodes are connected via thin cables to a "biosignal amplifier," which transmits the signals from the brain to a computer.

Different parts of the brain are used to process different types of thoughts. Vertical and horizontal hand movements are handled in an area called the sensory motor cortex, for example, said Christoph Guger, CEO of g.tec, which built the BCI system shown at CeBIT.

To use a BCI to move a computer cursor, the electrodes are placed over the corresponding part of the brain, where they read tiny fluctuations in voltage and feed them into a software program that analyzes them to figure out what the person is thinking.

The software needs to be trained to read the signals, which takes several hours to do properly. The subject responds to commands on a computer screen, thinking "left" and "right" when they are instructed to do so, for example. Another test involves looking at a series of blinking letters, and thinking of a letter when it appears.

The software "learns" what the brain's voltage fluctuations look like when those directions or letters are thought of, Guger said.

The system today is also quite slow -- even a trained system can "read" only 18 characters per minute, or three or four words. Still, that may be helpful for a disabled person who cannot communicate through speech or movement. About 200 disabled people worldwide are using the software at home to communicate, according to Guger, although they need professional help to set it up.

Another issue is accuracy. In a test at a conference in Austria about two years ago, 300 attendees were trained on the system for 30 minutes. After that time the system could figure out simple binary responses from most of the people 60 percent of the time -- or "better than random," Guger said. For 7 percent of the people, the accuracy was more than 90 percent, he said.

The technology is advancing. Five years ago the system was too bulky to be transported easily, and now the various parts can fit in a shoebox. In 10 years it could be fast and accurate enough to commercialize in home PCs or games consoles, according to Guber.

"Ultimately you could have wireless contacts embedded in the brain, and communicate with others just by thinking," he said. "But then you really would have to worry about your wife finding out about your girlfriend."

At CeBIT, a colleague of Guber's donned the BCI system and played the game "Pong" against a reporter. It has also been used to write letters, operate artificial limbs and steer a wheelchair. "It's not safe enough for wheelchairs today though; if it reads a command wrongly you could veer off into the road," Guger said.

The study of BCI took off in the 1990s, primarily at three laboratories, in Austria, Germany and the U.S. There are now 300 laboratories working on it, Guger said. He completed his Ph.D. in BCI at the Graz University of Technology, in Austria, in 1999, he said.

He sells his BCI systems mainly to scientists for research work. They are priced from €20,000 (US$26,000) to €100,000 depending on their sophistication. The company is showing a smaller, Pocket PC-based device at CeBIT that starts at €3,000. More information is at g.tec's Web site.

Measuring the brain's electrical activity like this is called electroencephalography, or EEG. It is noninvasive, meaning the electrodes are placed on the scalp without surgery, but it produces weaker signals and is subject to noise interference.

Invasive techniques produce better results but are tried only on patients who require brain surgery in any case, and on monkeys and other animals.

An engineer in the U.S. holds a patent on the general BCI concept, Guger said; other patents are held by universities for specific software algorithms used to decode the brain's signals.

G.tec's BCI is among the nominees for the European ICT Prize , the winners of which will be announced Friday. There are three grand prizes of €200,000 each.

So I gues that eventually everyone will have a computer integrated into their brains and look something like this...
